Everyone deserves a second chance in life. Our past mistakes do not define us and that’s exactly what Bakersfield College’s Program, “The Rising Scholars,” embodies. April is recognized as Second Chance Month and with that, Rising Scholars are dedicated to providing incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals opportunities for personal and academic growth. The Rising Scholars currently operate in five prisons in Kern and Kings Counties, Community Transitional Reentry Program, and two juvenile hall facilities. With their involvement in the system, they have also expanded their focus to on-campus students as well. On March 14 the Office of Student Life faculty presented students with a Barbie movie screening and cosplay competition in the Fireside room on campus. The host of the event, Bella Saldivar, shared her thoughts on the showing and how it can be used as an opportunity to put the voices and experiences of women at the forefront.“This is something we do every month, but this time it’s just for women.”, Saldivar said, “I love creating a community where people can express themselves and meet people outside of class.” Student Life, in addition to the Student Government and Latinas Unidas, was able to put on the movie and set up a woman-friendly environment full of pink decor and snacks. Deep Cuts and Conversations — that is the name of an event held at the Norman Levan Center three times a semester. But what does it entail? It may not be what you expect. “Deep Cuts and Conversations” provides an environment for people to listen to and talk about different pieces of music.
