My love of photography took root when I began hiking five years ago in the mountains of Flagstaff, Ariz., and during these past three years in the diverse mountain and desert areas of Kern County.
Kern County has given me the beauty of the Mojave Desert and the waters of Lake Isabella and the Kern River. All have been food for my spirit.
During my hikes, I savor the sights, sounds and smells of the mountain paths and the stunning views.
Depending on the time of year and the time of the day, there are certain trails I recommend for the best hiking, wildlife and photo opportunities.
The Unal Trail up at the Greenhorn Summit is one of my favorites. This 3.2 mile moderate hike reaches an elevation of about 7,000 feet. It is one of the “coolest” hikes in the heat of the summer.
Occasionally, deer and bear can cross your path, and always you will hear the various birds carrying on in their unique languages.
The River Trail at the Johnsondale Bridge, approximately 15 miles north of Kernville, is great for hiking a rocky trail alongside the Kern River. The Great Blue Heron can be spotted on a boulder, while snakes, some poisonous, can slither into or alongside your path.
The Cannell Trail on Sierra 99 in Kernville is an easy to moderate 3.2 mile hike. You’ll experience the wildflowers during the spring, and the red tail hawk, ravens and deer year-round.
These trails are a small portion of what is out there in Kern County, but with a little searching, hikers can find some great trails for all levels.
