Editorial staff responds to cartoon

Abstract:
The cartoon on page 7 of the March 17 edition of The Renegade Rip has sparked some controversy. It goes along with the Pro-Con articles on Student Government Association elections and depicts a monkey running for SGA. The image came from the Pro article, which says that if students don't take the initiative to vote in SGA elections, they might end up with howler monkeys throwing feces. Some people have construed it to be representing President Barack Obama and African-Americans in general. This was not the intent of the cartoon or the artist. We apologize for any offense this misunderstanding has caused and for not foreseeing the possible implications of the image.

If you would like to contact The Rip, we welcome letters to the editor, which can be sent to ripmail@bakersfieldcollege.edu or Bakersfield College, 1801 Panorama Drive, Bakersfield, CA 93305.

Would the picture even matter if the POTUS was white or Asian or Hispanic? No.

People can make an issue out of anything if they are so inclined. They see what they want to see and hear what they want to hear, take things out of context and make it an issue.
