Student consumers beware

The Better Business Bureau, along with local, state and federal government agencies declared the week of Feb. 4 Consumer Awareness Week. The BBB is an organization in the United States and Canada that acts as a conduit between consumers and businesses. While they do not have the authority to enforce business laws, the BBB Web site has information on illegal business practices and attempts to resolve disputes between businesses and consumers.

Approval moves process forward

Bakersfield College has crossed the finish line into reaffirmed accreditation. On Feb.13, BC President Bill Andrews got the good news in the form of the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges Commission Report for the commission's Jan. 10-12 official meeting.

Open-ocean diving class now at BC

A scuba class will be taught this semester at Bakersfield College. The instructors for the class will be David Miller and Tina Cummings. Miller owns a dive shop in town and is very excited about starting a dive class at BC. He said, "I expect it to take off like a hot air balloon taking off, then expand.

BC's faculty support

Four representatives of Bakersfield College's union were present for a Feb. 27 informational protest coordinated by the Bakersfield City School District. BC's union representatives were present to show solidarity amongst teachers' unions. The BCSD union, called the Bakersfield Elementary Teachers Association, is part of the California Teacher's Association, of which BC's union, the Community College Association of the Kern Community College District, is a member.

April 15th deadline for filing taxes, a necessary annoyance

If you don't file for taxes, you will eventually face jail time and heavy fines. "Anyone who works must file for taxes by April 15th ," said David Riddle, owner of Rosedale Tax service. Riddle has been filing taxes for 20 years. "This was my first time filing for taxes.

Jockeys host food bank

The radio station Play 103.9 FM, along with Golden Empire Transit and a slew of other sponsors, held a charity event at the Valley Plaza to benefit the Partnership Food Bank. The Partnership Food Bank, which is a subsidiary of the Community Action Partnership of Kern, provides food to destitute Kern county families.
