Korean War veterans gathered at Jastro Park on Oct. 5 for the delivery and installment of three granite engraved pedestals.
The pedestals will be used as a Korean War memorial dedicated to the men and women of Kern County who served their country during the Korean War.
Thomas G. Lewis, Korean War Veterans Association president, said the association has been working on putting together a memorial for five years.
The memorial project began in the year 2000, said Harvey Ginn, 82, retired 1st Sergeant, of the 351st Field Artillery Battalion.
After taking a trip to Korea for the 50th anniversary of the Korean War, Ginn began contacting Korean War Veterans to start up an association.
"I had the idea, and contacting the right people is what made it possible," said Ginn.
Lewis said the pedestals were bought from V.J. Memorials in Chino for approximately $30,000.
The pedestals are 10 feet long and contain a map of Korea, and the names and photos of fallen soldiers who served in the Korean War.
The memorial was paid by donations from the community.
Currently, the association has approximately 44 members.
They meet every fourth Wednesday of each month at the Veterans Hall located on Wilson Road. The Korean War memorial will be officially dedicated on Oct. 28 at 11 a.m.
