Bakersfield College's Campus Center was full of music while the high-rising smoke of the huge barbecue grill sent the smell of fresh beef across the campus. Student Government Association officials were making sure the events were going according to plan. Hundreds of students stood in line for their free hamburger on the last day of the student government's planned Spring Fling Week.
The California Living Museum hosted its week-long event known as CALM's Spring Fling. The CALM Spring Fling began on March 15 and concluded on March 22. The goal of this week-long event was to invite students to come and get a firsthand experience of the many different types of wildlife in the world while school was not in session.
While wildflowers bloom for the spring, people attend the fifth annual Cruisin' for a Wish car show at the Kern County Fairgrounds.
Black railroad tracks aligned between Buildings Two and Three at the Kern County Fairgrounds may have been the attraction for many children on March 8-9, for they could ride the Santa Fe train, granted they could charm their parents for $2. However, most of the goodies were found inside Building Two.
The month of March is marked as Women's History Month, and Bakersfield College celebrated by hosting a number of events including, "Contraception and Abortion," which featured Dr. Janet Brody. "This is a person of many talents," said a woman who introduced Brody.
Fishermen from all over gathered in the snow, sleet and rain to try their luck at the 19th annual Isabella Lake Fishing Derby, which ran March 15-17. A total of 5,082 people registered for the derby; it was the largest turnout since 1995. Speculation from those at the Kern River Valley Chamber of Commerce attributes the Internet for the phenomenal turnout even in the terrible weather.

With over 100 people in attendance, the film, which was produced by former talk show host Rikki Lake, explored the differences of women giving birth at home with a trained midwife rather than in the hospital.
The Kern River Celtic Association held its fifth annual St. Patrick's Day celebration on March 13. The KRCA is a non-profit organization. They mainly focus on throwing fundraisers like dinners and concerts to support other organizations around Kern County as well as help those of Celtic descent understand more about their own heritage.
