SGA election experiences first tie in BC history

For the first time in Bakersfield College history, the run for Student Government Association president ended in a tie and remains undecided due to controversy involving voter tampering. Voting originally occurred during the week of April 21-25.

Bakersfield Relay for Life the biggest in the state

Cal State-Bakersfield held its annual Relay for Life event on May 3. The 24-hour event raised money for cancer research.

Hundreds of people representing various schools, local organizations and teams were on the soccer fields of Cal State Bakersfield, showing support for Relay for Life on May 3. The 24-hour event started Saturday morning with the survivors lap and continued into the night and Sunday morning with people constantly walking around the field.

Mugema wins SGA presidency

Initial reports indicate that after tabulation for a run-off election for the Student Government Association president of Bakersfield College, Lyne Mugema has been declared the winner and will assume her role in the fall semester. Results can be found later on therip.

Grants to increase tourism

In an effort to stimulate growth in Kern County and to help further the mission of both the Buena Vista Museum of Natural History and the Bakersfield Museum of Art, grants were given to the two agencies. Rick Davis, director of the Board of Trade in Kern County, and Mike Rubio from the Board of Supervisors presented the 2007-2008 Kern County Tourism Promotion Grants on May 2.

Delano Campus needs constitution to have its own SGA

The Delano Campus will not be its own college, but it may have its own student government. Richard McCrow, the Delano Campus director, said the campus will eventually become its own college, but it requires certain standards that are yet to be met. "It's going to take 10-15 years," said McCrow.

Incoming BC president to build relationships

Greg Chamberlain, currently an administrator for the Kern Community College District, will replace William Andrews as BC president on July 1.

As president, Greg Chamberlain plans to first establish working relationships with the faculty and staff of Bakersfield College. Chamberlain, current vice chancellor of Kern Community College District, was named BC's 10th president April 25. He began his career at BC as an instructor in 1989, moved into executive positions and in 2005 became vice chancellor of the district.

Health Center doctor may be absent for summer

Bakersfield College students may have to suffer through finals without access to the doctor normally available at BC's Student Health Center. Dr. Michael Farber may not be at BC during the rest of May and all of June due to problems with his contract. Farber may be back at BC in July, said Debra Strong, BC nurse.
