A fatal shooting involving an 18-year-old woman occurred sometime after 11 p.m. Oct. 21 at California State University, Bakersfield’s campus, according to reports from the Bakersfield Police Department and a public statement made by CSUB’s President Horace Mitchell.
The victim has been identified as Bianca Janae Jackson, a 2010 Ridgeview High School graduate; she was not a CSUB student.
In a press conference with Mitchell, he indicated that the incident began following a scheduled Halloween event that was to have an estimated attendance of 30 plus guests at the CSUB campus before the party grew significantly larger than planned with persons not affiliated with CSUB or the event at which time the party carried over into the parking lot.
Soon after, physical fights broke out and shots were fired as CSUB police and BPD tried to break-up the event.
According to reports, Jackson was found shot in parking lot F; she was immediately transported to Kern Medical Center where she was pronounced dead at 12:35 a.m.
No other injuries have been reported.
Mitchell feels that the shooting was an isolated incident and that the campus is safe. Classes are set to proceed as scheduled. Mitchell also indicated that there has never been a shooting at CSUB.
The group that hosted the party was Black Young Starz, a campus club that had permission to hold an event.
According to reports, the persons of interest were black males and fled the scene in a black Cadillac Escalade.
BPD is now leading the investigation.
