ASBC elections set for this week
The Associated Students of Bakersfield College will hold elections Tuesday and Wednesday in Campus Center. At press time, a list of those seeking office was not available from ASBC officials.
Band, dancers help celebrate Cinco de Mayo
Bakersfield College Cinco de Mayo festivities will kick off in the Free Speech area at 10 a.m. Monday. There will be a pi§ata for the children from BC Day Care, followed by one at 10:30 a.m. for students.
A performance by a mariachi band and folklorico dancers in Campus Center will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Carne asada will be sold by BC food service.
Also in honor of Cinco de Mayo, the eighth annual Latino Commencement Celebration will be held May 15 at 7 p.m. in the BC Outdoor Theater. The event will be held in English and Spanish. For informantion, call 395-4532.
National Student Nurse’s Day is Thursday
The BC nursing faculty will celebrate National Student Nurse’s Day on Thursday in the Huddle at 1 p.m. Cookies and lunch will be served.
The Nursing Department will host an open house for anyone interested in the program in MS 50 and 51. The public is invited to attend.
Nursing Department receives $100,000
Bakersfield College will educate more nurses thanks to a $100,000 gift from the Millie Albin estate, donated by her children Dr. Penny Ablin and Todd Albin.
Millie Ablin was a longtime supporter of BC and a charter member of the BC Foundation, which began in 1975. A former nurse, she was a consistent supporter of nursing education. She kept her R.N. license current even though she had not worked as a nurse for many years, according to Walter G. Howald, BC Foundation director.
Spring Concert to be performed under the stars
The Bakersfield College Chamber Orchestra and Ensemble will present “Pops and Other Things” on Thursday. In addition to works by Bernstein and Ellington, the BC orchestra will perform student composer Brandon Russie’s world premiere of “How ‘s That Go Again?”
This year’s guest artist is violonist and composer Gary “Doc” Gertzweig of Los Angeles.
The musical evening under the stars will conclude with a rousing rendition of John Philip Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever.”
The concert begins at 7 p.m. in the BC Outdoor Theater. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $2 and children ages 12 and under are admitted free.
