Jacqueline Gutierrez, Reporter

The Child Development departments of CSUB, Taft College, and Bakersfield College met at Bakersfield College to announce the winners and submissions at the Indoor Theater on Nov. 21.

Students in the Child department of the three institutions created PSA videos of topics that involved children which they hold close to their hearts.

Judges for the film festival included: Mayor Karen Goh; Valente Guzman of the Early Childhood Council of Kern; KCCD Trustee and Professor Emeritus Nan Gomez Heitzeberg; Congressman Kevin McCarthy; and Capt. Scot Loetscher of the California Highway Patrol.

All the PSA videos that were submitted to the festival were acknowledged and shown

The featured videos included an entry by Michelle Miller who educated the audience on trauma and how it may impact the child in the future and she gave solutions on what to do if a child experiences a traumatic event.

Another featured video was submitted by a Bakersfield College Student who explained the importance of teaching American Sign Language (ASL).

The third-place position went to two Taft college students who explained face to face interactions in the lives of young children. The students described technology as a “digital pacifier” in the video and how technology limits social skills.

The second-place position went to Guadalupe from CSUB who educated the audience on how important it is for young children to eat healthy. Her video started off by a young child being offered sugary drinks and healthy drinks.

The first-place position went to Tyler Frost from Bakersfield College who educated the audience on how important it is to diagnose children at a young age and give them the care that they need.

During the month of December, the Maya Theater will be showing the PSA videos that won first, second, and third place during the advertisement portion of the showings.
