The mailroom is going to be closed and changed to its new location in the bookstore. At first glance, we, the students might think, “So what?” or “This doesn’t concern me!”
But the move has resulted in some upset professors who could suffer due to this new change.
You see, the mailroom is more than the obvious location for teachers to get their mail. It is also a place where they can converse, get together and relax before getting back to teaching a classroom at full student capacity. With no faculty lounge on campus, this is their only sanctuary from a crowded landscape of students.
The new mailroom will be placed in the bookstore next month. This leaves me wondering about the traffic jams upon entering the store. Will the teachers also have to wait in line and leave their personal belongings outside for theft and security reasons? After all, most students do not walk into the building thinking of a way to walk out with a free book, yet we all have to go through the security procedures. What about them?
Imagine not having a place to unwind after taking a horribly difficult or boring class. We students can go almost anywhere on campus, but I can’t say I remember the last time I saw a teacher lying on the grass eating a sandwich or smoking a cigarette under the shade of a tree.
Decisions like this one should be made with careful consideration and actual feedback from those who will be affected the most. In this case, that’s the teachers.
