“Exterritorial” came out on April 30 and is the most recent sci-fi thriller hit on Netflix. The setting in the film is in Europe, an isolated and broken country in the future. Jeanne Goursaud is the star actor in the film who is best known for her role in the historical series “Barbarians.” She adds tension to the exciting film as well as giving it an eerie feel and leaves the audience thinking.
Goursaud plays a government agent in a future Europe that has changed drastically. People in the film are constantly being watched by the government through technology for Europe to keep control and not become more unstable. Her job as an agent is to find any threats, but she slowly starts to question who the real villains are in the story and if she’s doing the right thing.
“Exterritorial” is not your typical sci-fi film. In order to understand the film, it’s important to focus on the psychological aspect of the film instead of the actions or fight scenes that happen. A lot of the films’ exciting moments are based on small quick moments that help build tension slowly. This is a serious and dark film that helps portray the message about freedom well.
Paula van der Oest, the director, does a fantastic job of keeping the audience at the edge of their seats questioning what’s coming next. The plot of the film isn’t easy to follow because some parts are really unclear, but questions that arise are important because they have to do with honesty and trust. In a world where people are being monitored and are worried about the government invading privacy, the film’s message feels real and not a far future.
Overall, “Exterritorial” is a different type of film that requires a lot of patience and thinking. The quiet and confusing moments aren’t for everyone, but if you like to think during thrillers then maybe it’s worth watching. You might have to answer your own questions or look closer into the film because it will leave you with a lot to consider.
