Women’s soccer gets first win

Bakersfield College’s women’s soccer team, after starting the season with two ties and two losses, won its first match with a 6-0 victory against L.A. Mission on Tuesday.

Jessica Ramirez scored two goals, and Beatrice Guzman had a goal and an assist for BC.

In another match, the Renegades tied Santa Barbara 0-0 on Sept. 17.

In their season opener Sept. 1, the ‘Gades scored early and seemed to control the rest of the game until Antelope Valley scored late to finish in a 1-1 tie.

The ‘Gades gave up a goal in each half against Moorpark College on Sept. 3 for their first loss of the season, and they lost 5-0 to Ventura on Sept. 14. BC plays at 4 p.m. today at home against Santa Monica.

Women’s golf

BC placed fourth in its first three Western State Conference mini-meets of the season. The team had a total score of 383 and was led by Brittany Porterfield who shot a 91 in the first meet on Sept. 8. Santa Barbara won that meet with a total score of 343.

Porterfield shot 74 in the second mini-meet Sept. 13 and finished in a tie for second place in the individual competition.

In the third meet on Sept. 20, Margie Elder shot an 89 and tied for fifth in the individual competition.

Santa Barbara has won all three mini-meets this season.

Cross country

Brittnay Grimes finished second in the Cuesta College Invitational with a time of 19 minutes 23.3 seconds for 3.1 miles. Teammates Jody Calderon finished in 21:40 for 50th place and Alexa Vasquez took 76th in 22:37. BC finished eighth as a team.

BC will compete this weekend in a meet hosted by Orange Coast in Äosta Mesa. The BC Invitational will be held Oct. 1 and the Western State Conference Preview meet is scheduled Oct. 8 at Kern County Soccer Park.


Five 2004 U.S. Olympic softball gold medalists – Kelly Kretschman, Jenny Topping, Lovieanne Jung, Amanda Freed and two-time medalist Crystl Bustos – will be instructing a hitting clinic on Saturday, Oct. 16, and a fielding clinic on Sunday, Oct. 17, at the Bakersfield College Softball Complex.

The BC team will hold its annual golf tournament on Saturday, Nov. 6 at Wasco Valley Rose Golf Course.

The format is a four-person scramble, and the cost is $65 per player which includes green fees, cart and tri-tip sandwich lunch.
