Over the weekend, the Bakersfield College volleyball team had a promising showing at the Kickoff Classic hosted by LA Pierce College where they went 3-1.

The tournament field consisted of 16 teams in a round-robin format guaranteeing each team four games respectively. The first round consisted of placement matches on Friday to determine seeding for the main tournament on Saturday.

In round one, BC faced Mt. San Jacinto College. Having no trouble, the Renegades swept the Eagles, 25-20, 25-14, 25-22. Outside hitter Daryan Heathcott led BC with nine kills and 10 digs. BC claimed the three seed and matched up with Cypress College in the winners bracket of the Friday matches.

In their match with Cypress, BC fell in the first set 27-25 but managed to rally in the second set, 25-23. However, Cypress regrouped and won the next two sets, 32-30, 25-17. Heathcott once again led the Renegades with 24 kills but it wasn’t enough as Cypress advanced past BC.

BC was moved into the consolation bracket to face Chaffey College on Saturday.

Initially dominating the first set with strong defense and solid play from their sophomore libero Lorena Ramirez, who finished with 28 digs, BC ran away with a 25-14 first set win. Chaffey quickly closed the gap in the second set, though, taking it 28-26.

Noticing his team was faltering, head coach Carl Ferreira called a timeout to settle his young team.

Following the timeout, BC went on to rejuvenate and win the next two sets, 25-22, 25-14.

BC wrapped up the day with a sweep over College of the Desert, 25-15, 25-12, 25-15 as three players finished with double-digit kills and digs.

The 3-1 Renegades will be hosting Santa Barbara, Grossmont and Antelope Valley in the Quad tournament on Sept. 5 beginning at 10 a.m. in the Gil Bishop Sports Center.Ca
