Pretenders or Contenders

Hilario Gomez, Reporter

Another week of football in the books and, not surprisingly, not too many questions have been answered and a ton more have popped up. Great teams playing way under expectation, and gritty teams on the rise are nothing new but captivate every season. This year specifically a slow start by offensive powerhouse Kansas City Chiefs and the coming-out party for the plucky Arkansas Razorbacks is what have many so puzzled

Chiefs might be pretenders?

No name is more synonymous with the NFL like the electric signal-caller Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, but a 1-2 start has many questioning if the Mahomes magic can cover for the holes on the Chiefs roster for yet another season. Big losses to the Baltimore Ravens and Los Angeles Chargers have exposed the Chiefs defense who can be categorized as optimistic at best. With top-tier talent and an aggressive playstyle, the defense has complemented the high-flying offense for so long by relying on turnovers and big plays. This, although an interesting model, is not the recipe for sustained success. (Note: The Chiefs although made it work for way too long). Conventional wisdom wins eventually though and in the early showings, the oddest defensive philosophy hasn’t been hidden as well by the offense. Although the verdict is still out for the Chiefs, if they continue in this direction they might just fall into the pretender category before it’s all said and done.

Wait Arkansas did what?

NUMBER EIGHT ARKANSAS!?! Yes, your eyes are not deceiving you that’s right number eight ranked team in the country the Arkansas Razorbacks. Coming into the season no one who wasn’t a diehard Razorback fan was expecting them to even fight to be ranked let alone be in contention for a top 5 ranking. Stuck in an ultra-competitive conference like the SEC with powerhouses like Bama and Georgia, it was damn near set in stone that the Razorbacks were going to be just a doormat on another team’s road to the national championship. Little did we know what Arkansas was going to bring to the table this season. Everything and I mean absolutely everything has been firing on all cylinders for this Razorback team this season. Statement wins over ranked teams Texas and Texas A&M have helped put the entire nation on notice.
