Strong performance Wednesday night, defeating West Los Angeles College in straight sets. The Renegades played with energy from start to finish, winning by scores of 25-18, 25-14, and 25-16.
The first set began evenly as both teams traded points in the early moments. West Los Angeles scored first, but Bakersfield quickly settled in and took control. The Renegades’ communication and serving helped them gain momentum, pulling ahead midway through the set. Strong defense at the net and smart placement on attacks kept West L.A. off balance. Bakersfield maintained their lead and closed out the opening set 25-18.
In the second set, the Renegades took over completely. They jumped out to an 8-2 lead and never looked back. Bakersfield’s hitters were accurate and aggressive, finding open spots on the court with ease. West L.A. tried to respond, but the Renegades’ passing and teamwork were too strong. Behind consistent serves and quick transitions, Bakersfield finished the set 25-14.
The third set started with West L.A. taking an early 2-0 lead, but the Renegades quickly responded to tie it up at 5-5. From there, Bakersfield took control once again, using a balanced attack to stretch their lead. Every player contributed, whether through blocking, diving saves, or well-placed kills. The Renegades’ confidence grew as they continued to execute, and they wrapped up the final set 25-16 to complete the sweep.
After the match, Carly Hayes (14) reflected on the team’s performance, saying, “It was a really good game, and I love the fight that we put up.” When asked what her best play was, Hayes added, “Definitely my last two hits in the third set—just those really deep corners where my setter set me one-handed, and I got it off.”
Chloe Lopez (2) also shared her excitement about the win. “I feel amazing,” she said. “I’m having so much fun this year with all of them, especially since they’re so young. There’s only a couple of sophomores, so it’s nice to share with them what we had last year and keep that energy going.” When asked about her best play, Lopez said, “Probably that one-arm save I had earlier, but honestly any balls that I run down—I love those moments.”
Head coach Penelope Zepeda spoke proudly about the team’s recent success. “It’s been feeling really good,” she said. “We’ve kind of struggled to get wins this season, so any boost to our record and to our spirit helps a little bit. We’re excited to just keep moving forward.” When asked if the game plan worked well, Zepeda replied, “Yes, it did. We typically go in with a similar plan and making adjustments based on our opponent, and it worked really well today.”
The win gives Bakersfield College its third straight victory, highlighting the team’s improvement and chemistry. With solid performances across the board, the Renegades will look to keep their momentum going in their next matchup.
