If 15-year-old Liz Niewiara had a million dollars, she would move to India to build homes. But since she lives in Bakersfield, she enjoys swimming, playing badminton and community service.
“I like to do community service because it’s fulfilling to do something selfless for someone else,” Niewiara said. “I want to make an impact by helping people, which is why I want to be a psychologist.”
The Liberty High sophomore plans to study psychology at Westmont College in Santa Barbara. She said that her inspiration comes from her supportive family and her friends, who are there to understand her.
Niewiara is taking the journalism summer workshop because she wants to improve her writing skills for the yearbook committee.
“English is my favorite class because my teacher was awesome,” Niewiara said. She did not enjoy math because she said she did not get along with the teacher.
In July, she will go to Idaho to visit family, but she would rather be in Australia.
“I want to go to Australia because they have cool accents,” she said. “Even though it’s hotter there than in Bakersfield.”
