Sabrina De La Cruz has 12 cats lazing about her porch. “I don’t even like cats that much. I prefer dogs,” said De La Cruz, who also owns three of the latter, as well as a bird named Pee Wee.
The incoming Centennial High School junior has lucid plans: De La Cruz wants to major in journalism at a four-year college and then put her schooling to use in the real world, possibly as a rock interviewer, traveling with bands from venue to venue.
Her short-term plans are much like the majority of Bakersfield’s teen population: De La Cruz plans to indulge in the extreme sport that is job hunting. She would like to work in a clothing store, which goes along with her love of shopping.
In spare time not spent browsing the racks of various stores, other plans for the summer include the dreaded driver’s ed class all driver’s suffer through.
De La Cruz enjoys watching television and reading.
Her favorite TV show is “That ’70s Show.” Her favorite book is “Anne of Green Gables.”
Although she may eventually marry, De La Cruz can’t picture herself as a mother.
Her two role models are both strong, independent women. De La Cruz speaks of her local idol, Olivia Reyes Garcia, with respect.
“She’s a reporter not only for The Bakersfield Californian, but she founded El Californiano, which is aimed towards the Hispanic community here in Bakersfield.”
De La Cruz throws out a more international celebrity as a second role model, Angelina Jolie, who is best known for her action-packed adventures in the summer blockbuster “Tomb Raider.” “I like oddball Hollywood people,” she explains.
She also likes burping, which De La Cruz uses as a response to a friend’s “How was your day?”
Although she may eventually marry, she can’t picture herself as a mother. Her family consists of her mother, father and a younger brother, Richard, who will be a sophomore at Bakersfield High School. She describes her circle of friends as small but close.
If given a million dollars, De La Cruz would buy a bigger house and a trip for her parents. “They never go anywhere,” she explains. For herself, De La Cruz would purchase a drum set and flute. She loves music and hopes to get back into school band in the fall.
