Bakersfield College’s women’s volleyball team has been selected to participate in the 2011 California Community College Athletic Association’s Women’s Volleyball Championship playoff.
The Renegades finished their season off with a sweep against West Los Angeles College 25-15, 25-15 and 25-12 in the Gil Bishop Sports Center on Nov. 17.
They will face sixth-seeded Pasadena City College (19-4) in the first round of the Southern California Regionals on Nov. 22.
Coach Carl Ferreira is encouraged by what he sees from his team and how they finished the season.
“We’re in a very healthy stage,” Ferreira said. “I’ve tried to develop a lot of internal leadership and at this stage we’re extremely healthy from the inside out, which means the nucleus and the core of the whole team is real powerful, real strong, and they’ve got their eyes dead-set on what they want to accomplish.”
The win against West LA, who hasn’t won a game all season, wasn’t a preview of the level of talent the team will face in the playoffs according the Ferreira.
“You have to prepare for postseason that starts on Tuesday,” he said. “You don’t want to have a mental letdown and then have to pick it back up. So I thought we were mentally sharp even though we were playing a [winless] team.
