Music, a big crowd and numerous booths were some of the things that characterized Career Day.
On April 20, students at Bakersfield College were given the opportunity to see different career options. Eighty-six different employers were present in the Campus Center quad.
“It was great,” said Denise Crawford, coordinator Work Ability II. “I think the employees liked it. They like to come and give information about their careers and also jobs that they have. Students like it because they can connect with different employers all at once.”
Businesses such as Mary Kay had a positive response about the event.
“This is my fifth or sixth year that I came up to the career day,” said Kathy Weir, Mary Kay representative. “It is always delightful to meet the people that organize it. People have a good attitude. We always need new men and women. As far as the career opportunity, we always meet someone who possibly looks for a part time job to go along with their other activities, whether they are going to school or have another job. It is nice to network and meet other people.”
Every year, the event is held at about the same time.
However, the planning starts on January of every year when phone calls are made by the staff and volunteers to all of those corporations that might have an interest for the students.
According to Weir, people attending the event seemed more serious and interested in the products and the companies’ opportunities compared to last year.
“It was pretty good,” said Jeffrey Goforth, a Navy representative. “It was pretty busy. We ran out of quite a few items. Each year is different. Some years are busy; some are not so. Everybody was pretty polite, everybody seem to get along with each other.”
It was sponsored by the Corporative Aid Department, and this year the event was co-sponsored by KGET, which ran commercials to promote the event.
