Bakersfield College’s baseball team faced off against Los Angeles Mission College on Mar. 19 in the opening match of a three-game series.

After going down 9-3 in the sixth inning, the Renegades baseball team rallied to score five in the last three innings, bringing the crowd to their feet. Despite that, they fell short in a 9-8 defeat, bringing their record to 5-17 (win-loss). It was their fourth loss in the last five games.

Looking to make a statement, the Renegades started off the scoring with a strong first inning, as an Adan Rivera single and a Luke Shaw hit by pitch put the home team up 2-0.

John Alderete (1-3) was the starting pitcher for BC. While Alderete started the outing with two scoreless innings, everything unraveled afterwards.

However, L.A. Mission came to play, as they scored four in the third inning to take the lead for good. They added three in the fifth, which chased Alderete out of the game. He ended up taking the loss, giving up six in four innings, striking out six and walking four.

While the rally turned out to fall short, BC did not give up after that 9-3 deficit. BC’s Adan Rivera, who finished the game with two runs batted in, started the rally late in the seventh inning.

“That whole feeling was pretty electrifying, especially the way we got to that point,” Rivera said about the final three innings that hyped up the home crowd.

The Renegades season continues to go on a downward spiral, as they now sit 17 games behind .500. The second game of this series is to be played at L.A. Mission on Mar. 21, before returning for the finale on the following day.
