The Student Government Association of Bakersfield College has begun planning for Homecoming Week, which is scheduled Oct. 26-Oct. 29 and will finish with a football game Oct. 31 to cap an event-filled week.
The SGA is allotting $8,000 for the festivities of the week. Students will have their pick of a myriad of activities during homecoming, such as laser tag, a rock wall, a mechanical bull, gladiator joust and a free photo booth. As of the last SGA meeting Sept. 18, clearance for joust, mechanical bull, rock wall and laser tag activities had not been cleared by Self Insured Schools of California, and this item was postponed to be discussed at the next SGA meeting.
In addition to the activities, there will be free giveaways. BC’s homecoming colors this year will be a retro theme. Using the emblems and colors from the original logo made in 1937, homecoming shirts will be maroon instead of the bright red from years past. An estimate of $8,200 has been given to make 1,500 shirts.
SGA will purchase $4,000 worth of spirit supplies, including Renegade colored beads, lanyards and thunder sticks, which will be given away at the game against Ventura. This estimate also includes the king and queen’s sash and crowns.
To keep the student body updated on what is happening during the week, SGA will have posters of all the week’s activities around campus. If students have any questions about homecoming, look for retro jerseys. The SGA will be wearing them to identify themselves as ambassadors of week and also “to get to know students better,” said Kristi Newsom, SGA president.
Some of last year’s homecoming events were canceled, the tug of war being the most apparent, due to lack of participation. BC student Greg Howell said, “I’m going to try and go to as many as possible. It sounds fun.”
