Bakersfield College student Bongsu Koo, 37, registered nurse major, has created a website that not only provides Koreans with information on how to go about living in Bakersfield, but also gives information about jobs, real estate, life experiences, and answers to questions anyone posts.
The website was created in April and has 49 members so far. Koo keeps up with the website weekly spending more than three to four hours on it. He plans on keeping it updated for as long as he remains in Bakersfield.
“This information will help others who do not know how to set up a new life in a strange place,” said Koo. “My main goal is to help the Korean people who come from other areas adapt to Bakersfield.”
According to Koo, and many can relate, it is very troubling to come to a new place as a new immigrant.
Koo immigrated to the United States from Korea three years ago. According to Koo, he made many mistakes throughout his journey of adapting to Bakersfield and now that he has gotten a better experience and has had the opportunity to explore Bakersfield, he wants to help those who might be experiencing the feelings he felt when he was new here.
He posted all of the process of enrollment information in Korean language. “It works very well,” said Koo.
However, the website’s information is not limited to only that. It also includes simpler things that not many people pay much attention to, such as how to become a Costco member and how to enroll your child in pre-school, added Koo.
“It feels great to help people and when I get feedback from them it makes me happy,” said Koo
