“Game On!” BC

On Jan. 24 students played video games hosted by Bakersfield College student life center.

Ready player one! The Renegade Events Center at the Bakersfield College main campus transformed into a bustling hub of excitement as enthusiastic gamers gathered for the first Game On event of the 2024 Spring semester. Gamers from all walks of life piled into the newly renovated Renegade Events Center on Jan. 24.

This immersive gathering, hosted by the Office of Student Life, was designed to kick off the new semester with a bang by providing students with a welcoming space to connect, compete, and celebrate their shared passion for gaming.

According to Game On event staff, Daisha, it was described as a “fun welcome event where students were able to come together during the first week of school.”

From popular family favorite board games such as Battleship, Monopoly, and Uno to thrilling multiplayer video games such as Mario Kart, and Super Smash Bros; gamers appeared eager and excited to display their competitive spirits amongst other like-minded gamers.

As attendees streamed through the newly renovated center doors, they were greeted by a vibrant and inviting atmosphere including free snacks and merchandise, board game-filled tables, and large LED screens lined up on one side of the room.

One of the highlights of the event was representatives from the Office of Student Life, who shared insights into the collaborative process behind the creation of Game On. When asked about the inspiration behind the event, Office of Student Life front desk technician Lily Linares eagerly explained that it was a joint effort among the entire Student Activities Department. Through brainstorming sessions and a shared commitment to fostering a sense of community on campus, the idea for Game On was born.

Gamers engaged in friendly rivalries and whether they were strategizing their next move in Battleship, navigating the treacherous tracks of Mario Kart, or unleashing their inner brawlers in Super Smash Bros., participants embraced the opportunity to bond over their shared love for gaming.

As the event drew to a close, participants were seen leaving with smiles on their faces.

The Game On event successfully achieved its mission of uniting gamers and creating a memorable experience to kick off the new semester.
