Bakersfield residents do not have to drive all the way to Los Angeles in search of a comedy show.
The Joker’s Wild Comedy Club at The Jungle CafÇ, located at 700 Truxtun Ave., provides residents a source to see comedians who have toured across the country every Saturday of each week.
The cost for college students is $8 for the 8 o’clock show and $5 for the 10:30 show.
Keith Barnes, Stephanie Bryant and Quevaughn Bryant put on the club.
“A lot of them you have seen on television before,” said Quevaughn Bryant
On Sept. 11, the comedians were Cain Lopez and Dean Austin.
Austin was the first comedian up on the stage. He has appeared on BET and on the show “Showtime at the Apollo. ”
Austin talked fast as he was giving his monologue, which covered various topics, one of which was about Bakersfield.
“I ain’t been to Bakersfield in about five years so it’s good to be back and see how much it has grown. I noticed you got a Best Western now and that’s a beautiful thing. Before you had a Motel 6 and a Motel 8 but now you have a Best Western so you’ve moved up in the chain,” said Austin.
Lopez has been featured on BET and HBO. One of his topics was about relationships.
“For ladies, marriage is like a game show, if you lose there’s still consolation prizes. … It’s a house, a car, a check every month and half of everything he loves,” he said.
Lopez said it was one of his better crowds.
“It was a small crowd but it was one of the better thinking crowds. It was wonderful. They got every little bit. The energy was great,” said Lopez, after the show.
Members of the audience said they enjoyed the acts.
Frank Victoria, 35, said the show was fun.
“It’s pretty cool for Bakersfield,” said Vikki Dare, 39.
