Bakersfield College Rotary Club president Kyle McClintock, 20, an agriculture and business management major, said the club is “all about community.”
Ed Knudson, dean of Economic and Workforce Development, who was also involved with the Bakersfield Breakfast Rotary Club, went to the Agriculture Ambassadors to start a campus Rotary Club in May of last year.
Paul P. Harris formed the first Rotary Club more than 100 years ago in Chicago.
It was called a Rotary Club because the meetings would rotate among members’ offices.
There are many Rotary Clubs throughout Bakersfield, and the BC Rotary Club works with these Rotary Clubs in serving the community.
The BC Rotary Club recently helped plant 100 trees at a park in Bakersfield, and they are currently getting involved with Relay For Life.
The BC Rotary Club also does the roofing on houses for Habitat for Humanity.
McClintock finds being a part of the Rotary Club a great opportunity to network with businesses.
There are many businesses that are a part of Rotary Clubs. He said it’s a great way for business majors at BC to meet important businessmen and get their foot in the door.
McClintock said that being in the club, “Is a good chance to help people in the community, and you meet a lot of good people.”
The club holds meetings in the Executive Board Room in the Campus Center on the first and third Monday of each month.
Any BC student can go to the meetings to see what the club is all about.
To become a member, one needs to be sponsored by a current member of the Rotary Club, and once a person shows they are consistent they will get a certificate of recognition.
For now, only BC students can be a part of the club, but they are hoping to branch out to Cal State University Bakersfield.
