On a wet and rainy night March 17, another voice filled the night sky. And it wasn’t the sound of raindrops hitting the ground.
It was the sound of the Bakersfield College Chorale and the Bakersfield College Chamber singers, who performed at First Congregational Church on Stockdale Highway and Real Road.
The concert, in the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day, was called “Wearin’ of the Green.” The church was filled to capacity with people wearing green.
The 37-member choir sang and danced to world culture music and Irish music. The music from the concert was meant to show how the United States has many different cultures of music.
Susan Scott, a freshman at BC and one of the members of the choir, said she enjoys the concerts because “they’re really motivating, and I enjoy entertaining people.”
BC music instructor Ron Kean conducted songs, such as “Kua Ronga, “Past Life Melodies,” “Kyrie,” “Arroz con leche,” “El Guayaboso,” “Consita Linda,” “Lanigans Ball,” “Skibereen,” “Brown Penny” and “Wearin’ of the Green,” the song which gave the concert its name. the singers were accompanied by Elizabeth Cervantes, and featured special guest Banshee in the Kitchen as well.
The group Banshee in the Kitchen, made of up women who are Irish, accompanied on “Brown Penny” and performed some Irish songs with guitar, accordion and fiddle. The audience applauded loudly after their performance.
Proceeds from the concert will help the Chorale and Chamber Singers take a trip to San Juan, Costa Rica, to perform at the Universidad Nacional in June.
