For nearly two years, the Biscuit Boutique, which is located in downtown Bakersfield on 19th street, has been offering Bakersfield a taste of high class . . . for dogs anyway.
Owner Stacey Howard opened this unique store in December of 2004 offering specialty items for canine lovers.
Clothing for dogs by Juicy Couture, dog carriers/strollers ranging in price from $65 up to $600, sunscreen for dogs, cologne and perfume for dogs, birthday items, dog tents and playpens, seasonal items such as Halloween costumes, collars and leashes from $22 to $170, dog beds for around $275, and dog food and specialty treats are only some of the items offered at this store.
“Business is definitely pretty good,” says Matt Flanagan, assistant manager. “We have items for every price range. We’ve tried to provide for every one.”
Flanagan, who is a passionate dog lover, owns four Great Danes: Patrick-Edward, Binga-Marie, Trevor-John and Princess-Dottie, which weigh anywhere from 135 pounds to 180 pounds and one Yorkshire terrier, Chole-Ann, who weighs 3.6 pounds.
Clothing is their biggest selling item in the store, and they offer a number of different jackets, shirts, and skirts.
Featuring clothing line Juicy Couture, they have shirts that have sayings like “Juicy Drama Queen” and according to Flanagan, “Dogs enjoy wearing the clothes, because we’ve humanized dogs for so long that they enjoy wearing clothes. My Great Dane will wear her skirt for hours.”
The Biscuit Boutique also offers seasonal items, and since it is going to be the Halloween season soon they are already stocking up on costumes and treats. Anything from eyeball-shaped dog treats to costumes that smell like bubble gum. There is a whole section dedicated to Halloween costumes.
“This is not just a dog clothing store,” says Flanagan.
“We also offer dog-training classes and are working on getting a dog groomer.”
