Kern County High School District paired with local colleges to host the 2023 Kern County College Night at Mechanics Bank Convention Center on Monday, Sep. 11.

The colleges California State University Bakersfield, California Aeronautical University, Taft College, and more provided information to incoming seniors and transfer students at the event.

Starting out as just a small event held in the CSUB gymnasium, this event has provided students with information about colleges all over the country for years.

The event provided information regarding financial aid and scholarships and information sessions let students meet with representatives and people who make it easier to find out what they would want to pursue.

Christine Goedhart-Humphrey, Instructional Services Program Support Coordinator for the Kern County superintendent of schools, claimed that students truly make the most out of this event especially if they ask the right questions. These can include: “Questions like what are the requirements, is there a pathway that is best suited for impacted programs, what do the representatives recommend presenting a competitive edge, and questions such as demographic and size of the campus,” Goedhart-Humphrey expanded.

She recommended finding schools that suit your learning style.

Students who come from smaller schools might find bigger universities more difficult. This may be because they aren’t used to the less hands-on approach a large school may have versus a smaller university.

It is recommended to talk to your counselor and a future counselor of the school to find the best housing options, financial aid options, and even scholarship opportunities offered to students in certain programs.
