Trick Pony performed for a diminutive but appreciative crowd Sunday night at the Kern County Fair. Even though a lot of the seats in the stands were vacant, the crowd that was there was extremely loud, with earsplitting whistles and screams.
Members of this good-looking band include Heidi Newfield on lead vocals, acoustic guitars and harmonica; Keith Burns on vocals and acoustic guitars; Ira Dean on vocals and electric bass; and Brian Nelson on drums.
Newfield, who has lived in Nashville, Tenn., for many years, is originally from Wasco. She introduced her whole family, which was seated on the side of the stage.
All the members of the band are really attractive, which is a sure win for any group these days. The men couldn’t keep their eyes off Newfield, while the women were screaming Burns’ and Dean’s names.
Usually, bands that are obviously put together for their looks are easy targets for ridicule, but this band actually has real talent.
Newfield is awesome on the harmonica and has a remarkable voice. All I can say about Burns is that he is so good-looking and his charisma adds to his sex appeal. Every woman in the audience couldn’t keep their eyes off of him. Dean is the comedian of the group. He kept everyone in the crowd laughing all night with his impressions and jokes.
Toward the end of the concert, the band had some time to just mess around on the stage and get personal with the crowd. Dean did an impression of Bill Cosby singing the song, “Working Man Blues,” which sent the crowd roaring in laughter. He also did an impression of Kid Rock and everyone noticed the extraordinary resemblance.
Keith ended the concert expressing his love for Bakersfield in a few memorable words that I will not forget.
“Bakersfield people remind me of my hometown in Georgia,” he said. “As I look around, I can see that you all are like a bunch of high-class rednecks. I love you guys!”
I wasn’t sure how I should have taken that comment. I think I was insulted, but I’ll let it slide because he was so good-looking.
