M.E.Ch.A. celebrated the Day of the Dead, El Dia de los Muertos, Wednesday with a shrine in front of the Student Services building.
To honor the memory of those who have died, the shrine included a variety of items, including whiskey and cigarettes.
The day, which is traditionally celebrated in Mexico and parts of the United States, dates back thousands of years when it was practiced by indigenous peoples in what is now Mexico.
The Aztecs believed that death was just a continuation of life. To make the ritual more Christian, Spanish conquistadors moved it so it coincided with All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day (Nov. 1 and 2), which is when it is celebrated today.
