Friday was a night of smiles and hugs for Bakersfield College graduates.
During the 89th commencement ceremony in Memorial Stadium, they heard words of wisdom from Dr. Sandra Serrano, BC president, teachers Don Turney and Mark Staller, and from students Greg Lopez and Rafael Galvan.
The Bakersfield College Commencement Orchestra led by director Robert Martinez provided “Pomp and Circumstance” and other music as students received their diplomas.
Nan Gomez-Heitzeberg, dean of student learning, and Dean of Students Beto Gonzalez read the names of students as they crossed the stage.
All graduates immediately became honorary members of the BC Alumni Association, according to Becki Whitson, BC teacher and alumni association officer. She also demonstrated school spirit by occasionally leading the faculty in “the wave.”
A reception was held outside the stadium following the ceremony for graduates and their families.
