Bakersfield’s annual Ice Cream Shootout was held Sunday at the Kern County Museum.
“We were sold out within the first 30 minutes. We had to turn people away who had not already purchased their tickets,” said Heather Phillips, president of the Kern County branch of Junior Achievement.
Kids walked around with spoons in their hands and smiles from ear to ear.
“I had so much fun, I won a lot of prizes and ate a lot of ice cream,” said Taylor Alexander, an 11-year-old girl who was enjoying a day with her family. Coldstone Creamery, Dewar’s and Lapperts donated ice cream to the event.
“I’d donate my time for the kids any day,” said Rafael Melendez mayor of McFarland, who was here with The Gas Company.
The event would not have been complete without an ice cream eating contest, which allowed kids and their families to get into the fun.
“We’re teaching kids how to become successful citizens,” said Gary Hickman, president of the Southern California branch of Junior Achievement.
