The old saying goes like this: Out of sight, out of mind, and many Bakersfield College students feel that BC’s Student Government Association has not been particularly visible.
“They don’t publicize!” said Mick Ojeda, 22, a math major. “How do I communicate what I need them to do? I never know what they’re doing. I know they’re there, but.”
“I don’t know who they are,” said John Salgado, 20, very simply. The electrical technology major shrugged and did not elaborate further.
Some BC students are able to identify specific problems that they feel can be addressed by the SGA.
“There are problems with the parking permits,” said Monica Bonilla, anthropology major.
“I’ve had to park in the teachers’ zone and in the 45-minute zone. They (SGA) should know how many permits accurately work. They should have a plan.”
Most BC students just want SGA to put themselves out more in the public eye.
“SGA should put out fliers so students will know what they’re doing,” said Jeanette Rufus, 24, a nursing major. “I don’t know what they’re doing.”
“I don’t know hardly anything about the Student Government Association,” said Brent Pearcy, 22, a nursing major. “They need to sponsor events and put out questionnaires.”
“I’m an incoming freshman, and I think SGA should get the freshmen involved; they should make freshmen feel more welcome,” said Maricela Gonzalez, 17, a music major.
