BCSGA town hall talks new semester

The Bakersfield College Student Government Association hosted a town hall meeting on the second floor of the Campus Center building on Aug. 28 to introduce themselves to the attendees and answer any questions they may have.

The assembly, attended by only a few individuals, addressed several matters of interest, including SGA meeting times, how to join a club, how to join SGA itself (of which nine members were present), and how to contact them.

Angela Rivera, a sophomore student majoring in psychology, was in attendance and eager to be there. She hoped to learn more about the various programs, advantages, and perks offered at BC. When asked about how she thought the event would affect her, she said she hoped to feel more comfortable at the school.

Though there were light refreshments and some useful gifts offered to the attendees, a way to incentivize students to be there, few students stayed beyond the “meet and greet” portion before the town hall was officially called to order.

After introductions, a Q and A was started, and the floor opened to the guests.

One student inquired about issues with DSPS (Disabled Students Programs and Services) and another with legalities.

All voices were welcomed and heard with the promise of further investigation.

BCSGA meeting times are every first and third Wednesday of the month at 4 p.m. for the executive branch, second or fourth Wednesday for the senatorial branch at 4:30 p.m., first and third Friday at 11 a.m. for the student organizations, and every second and fourth Friday at 11 a.m. All take place at the Office of Student Life.

One can join a club by contacting the director of student relations, and a BCSGA sticker can be purchased by visiting the Office of Student Life at BC. A sticker will provide the student with access to 10 free scantrons, pantry items, copies from the campus printers, and other discounts, as well as free access to home sporting events.

BCSGA can be reached on Facebook by visiting the Bakersfield College Student Government Association page, on Instagram at bcsgarenegades, and on TikTok and Twitter/X bcsg.
