Humbling and freeing are how Sicilian music preservationist and multi-talented musician Katie Scaffidi Knudson described the journey of finding her voice and rekindling her love for music through the event that took over a year of preparation.

On February 10th at the Bakersfield College main campus Katie Scaffidi Knudson accompanied by seasoned musician and principal pianist for the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra John Calanchini, hosted musical event “For La Cultura.”

The concert was a celebration of Sicilian music and was deeply rooted in the island’s history and diverse cultural influences. From traditional folk melodies to modern interpretations, the concert offered a diverse range of music, ensuring that there was something for everyone to enjoy.

Knudson and Calanchini formed an exceptional duo, captivating the audience with a mesmerizing performance. Knudson’s enchanting vocals were perfectly complemented by Calanchini’s skilled piano compositions, creating an unforgettable experience for all who attended the event.

Throughout the concert, Knudson and Calanchini shared fascinating insights about the historical and cultural significance of the songs performed. Their deep knowledge and passion for Sicilian music shone through their engaging storytelling, enhancing the audience’s appreciation, and understanding of the music. “I love this music and want to educate people about it,” said Knudson. “I hope people love it as much as I do.”

In an exclusive interview done with Knudson and Calanchini, the duo described the preparation of the event in three words: collaborative, humbling, and enlightening. “It has been a very interesting and enlightening musical journey,” said John Calanchini. “I don’t really understand the Sicilian language so there have been times where I have to just feel the emotions in her [Scaffidi] voice and make the music match.”

Scaffidi expressed how working on this event reignited her passion for music and gave her an opportunity to really hone her talents in a way that she never could. “I’ve never had the opportunity to have my own voice, so it has been very liberating and fun,” said Scaffidi. “It reinvigorated my love of what I do.”

The duo performed together center stage in the Edward Simonsen Indoor Theatre in front of a packed house filled with music lovers and adoring supporters. “For La Cultura” ended with a standing ovation from the audience and a gleeful looking Knudson and Calanchini bowing in appreciation for those in attendance.
