One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. That seems to be the motto of the wildly popular Web site eBay. Everything from new cars to used Band-Aids have been sold on the yard sale like site.
But is there anything off limits, like, say, someone’s virginity?
A 20-year-old male from the United Kingdom put his virginity on sale June 22 for a seven-day listing. After only 12 hours, the bidding was up to almost $100 million.
Whether or not the bidders are seriously considering the transaction, this man’s willingness to give himself up to the highest bidder is only the newest gimmick in an age of materialism and lack of morality. I don’t take issue with his wish to lose his virginity, but with the casual nature with which he approaches the situation.
The man describes himself physically and emotionally as if writing an ad for the personal section: “…I am 20 years old with hazel eyes [and] stand at 5’11”, I am a very quiet person.”
He says that the reason he is still a virgin is because he doesn’t go out much. He concludes his plea for sex by asking for a “gentle caring woman” of any age. Oh, and he enjoys Italian food and long walks on the beach. Give me a break! This guy is just hamming it up for a little attention, completely disregarding any personal aspect that is ever involved with sex.
This loser’s pathetic attempt to get some has sadly already been answered by 100 bidders, most of whom are probably just having a laugh at his tragic life. Whether or not this guy is just having his own fun, he has portrayed himself to be a desperate, greedy weirdo.
Mr. Virgin has discovered a completely new outlet for prostitution. At least one copycat effort has already been posted, no doubt the beginning of a brand new type of eBay entry. At press time, the online company had not taken any public action against the posting or pulled the entry.
How sad it is that this goof-off appears to be trying to make a ridiculous fortune off of a meaningless sex romp with an unknown buyer but that daily laborers are making less than $20,000 a year.
This eBay item is just a testament to our times of laziness, sexual promiscuity and avariciousness.
