The war in Iraq was justified with many reasons including United Nations resolutions ordering Iraq to dismantle its weapons of mass destruction, terrorist activity and finding out whether Iraq possessed these weapons.
Republicans and Democrats have both said that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.
U.S. Sen. John Kerry, along with other prominent Democrats, said that Iraq had WMDs and the United States should engage in military action if necessary.
“[We] urge you, after consulting with Congress, and consistent with the U.S. Constitution and laws, to take necessary actions (including, if appropriate, air and missile strikes on suspect Iraqi sites) to respond effectively to the threat posed by Iraq’s refusal to end its weapons of mass destruction programs,” stated a letter that he signed along with Sen. Joe Lieberman, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, Sen. Barbara A. Milulski and Sen. Tom Daschle on October 9, 1998.
Iraq’s former dictator, Saddam Hussein, used WMDs on his own people and if he had them might have used them on the Kurdish population because of the revolts they organized against his government. He might also have used them against American troops.
With Saddam out of the power seat, his people now have freedoms that they did not have before. They don’t have to worry about chemical or biological weapons being used against them.
Now, the mass graves are being uncovered. The torture chambers ran by the government are no longer active. The rape rooms that allowed women to legally be raped are also no longer active.
If we do not defeat terrorism now while it is in other countries, we will be defeated by terrorism because it will spread to our country. As President Bush said, we must bring justice to terrorists or they will bring unfair justice to us.
On 9-11, it only took four planes and 19 hijackers to kill almost 3,000 innocent Americans people. This is a prime example of what terrorists are willing to do to kill others.
The original plan was to hijack 10 airliners and crash them into buildings and nuclear plants on both the East and West coasts.
Although this plan may not have been fully carried out, al-Qaida is probably planning the next attack against innocent people whether it takes place in our country or abroad.
Paul Johnson, an innocent American working in Saudi Arabia, was recently beheaded. Iraqi guerrillas linked to al-Qaida also beheaded American businessman Nick Berg, another innocent civilian. On June 21, Iraqi militants that are believed linked to al-Qaida, according to the U.S. government, beheaded a South Korean translator.
Iraq may not have had ties to 9-11 but it is clear that Saddam Hussein supported terrorism and both Republicans and Democrats acknowledged that. Iraq had to be secured.
Many U.N. resolutions were passed ordering Iraq to destroy their WMDs. Clearly, Iraq did not comply with the voice of the international community.
The United Nations should have acted but didn’t, which left the United States to act for them.
“The course of this conflict is not known, yet its outcome is certain. Freedom and fear, justice and cruelty, have always been at war, and we know that God is not neutral between them,” President Bush said about the war on terrorism.
