Tehachapi Sports Tavern “Prohibition” review

In Tehachapi there’s a new sports tavern that replaced Gold Mountain called Prohibition which opened Sept. 15. The layout of the restaurant seemed to be made smaller, with a décor appearing more minimalist than the previous sports tavern. This was most likely due to the quick turn around and early opening, but it was still a pleasant environment.

There were sections with short and tall seating arrangements, but it was apparent that some, if not all of the tables weren’t ready for business. The tables had a resin layer on top that wasn’t fully cured, which caused anything that rested on top to get stuck. It was an uncomfortable addition to the dining experience and was a very unexpected aspect to find.

Customer service at Prohibition was efficient in the kindness offered, but the number of times the staff kept checking in made it feel very rushed.

The brief menu that you have to ask what they offer for the Chefs Choice dessert. (Jorge Gutierrez)

The small menu is reasonable for a new restaurant, but the pricing listed, compared to what you get is a different story. Their fries are expensively priced, the Garlic Truffle Fries were $15, and the Hand Cut Sweet Potato Fries were $10, but both orders of fries were thin and soggy, and were a very small portion that shouldn’t be priced that high. The presentation and plating of the fries were pleasant but that didn’t save the dish. The wait time for the food was interestingly long for the portion of food they offered, and there was a mix up with ordering the fries. They brought out their regular fries instead of the sweet potato fries, which were $8.

The Chefs Choice desserts on the menu didn’t make it clear that there was more than one dessert and leaves a weird mystery factor since you had to ask for what dessert they had. The option chosen to order was the Blackberry Cheesecake which also took long, but the pricing of $12 comparative to the portion and quality was matched well. The cheesecake tasted amazing and was nicely plated. The presentation didn’t look like a cheesecake but was an excellent interpretation, nonetheless.

The atmosphere and theme were conveyed through presentation very well, but the quality, portion, and pricing for some items didn’t meet up to expectations.
