“Taylor Swift: Eras Tour” film review

“Taylor Swift” appears in the Edwards Theater at the Marketplace in Bakersfield, CA (Natalie Flores)

I dragged my husband to see the new Taylor Swift film that came out on Oct. 13. “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” concert movie is a spectacular LIVE performance of Taylor Swift at The Eras Tour in SoFi Stadium that was filmed back in early August 2023. The Eras Tour is Taylor Swift’s sixth tour and the film, directed by Sam Wrench, offers 40 songs in 2 hours and 48 minutes.

My husband was so sweet to have bought me the Taylor Swift popcorn bucket and tumbler ahead of time, thinking the theater would sell out so fast due to popular demand. To my surprise, not every theater was full opening weekend and there were still quite a few empty seats left. Despite reports that the film had estimated $95M in ticket pre-sales with an estimated 4.8 million people to have attended the film over opening weekend, according to NBC news.

I noticed that most of the audience were mothers with their teen daughters and girl groups in glitter and pastels, seated sporadically throughout the theater. During the pre-view commercials, girls exchanged homemade friendship bracelets while connecting with other fellow “Swifties.”

“Swifties” is a term used to call someone who is a fan of Taylor Swift. Perfection was when the audience not only knew every lyric but sang along as well.

I, a verifiable “Swiftie,” have been a fan of hers since her country days in the industry, the concert film did not disappoint me. In fact, the entire time I was marveling at all the pyrotechnics and stage magic, had me thinking this would no doubt be an amazing performance in person. The film easily overstimulated all the “Swifties” in the theaters as people were singing and dancing to the pop icon’s lyrics.

Now we are not going to act like my husband does not know any of her songs. By default, of being simply married to me, he has inevitably heard her absolute bangers over the years. But the moment that his vibe changed was when “…Are You Ready For It?” came on. He said that “that performance alone had no business going that hard.” It was a bit of a canon event for him.

We walked out of the theater fully impressed by Ms. Swift, and you best believe I was bejeweled.
