Students from the Multicultural Summer Journalism Workshop stormed Sam Lynn Ball Park in search of stories June 20.
From taking pictures of the game with cameras worth more than $10,000, to reporting with a pad of paper and pencil, students searched for their stories.
“I’m really shy, so it was hard to go up to people at first,” said junior Liz Niewiara.”But after I saw how friendly they were, it was easier.”
Some students resisted talking to people, while others like junior Cathleen Wang jumped right in.
“I found my story in five minutes, but I talked to a lot of people that night,” said Wang. “I got to talk to everybody. I’ve never had the chance to do that. It was the best night of my life.”
The journalists talked to the mascot, program seller, married couples and booster club members.
Students also had the opportunity to use several state-of-the-art digital cameras during the game.
After conducting a photo seminar earlier in the day, John Harte and Alex Horvath of The Bakersfield Californian offered use of the newspaper’s cameras.
As they left the game Thursday night, the student journalists had experienced chasing the story and capturing it in pictures.
