Jacqueline Lebeck is a sophomore tennis player for the women’s tennis team. Lebeck, who is at BC as a nursing major, was born in Cortez, Colorado in 1987.
Lebeck attended Highland High School where she played on the tennis team for one season. This season marks her first and only year of playing tennis in college. “I just want to win. I do it for the team, I put my game face on for the team”, Lebeck said.
Coach Gene Lundquist says that Lebeck’s game is a work in progress, “She hasn’t been playing that long but she is a tremendous competitor and a real fine athlete she’s quick, every time she hits the ball she is going to improve.” All she needs is more experience; her finest attribute is her competitiveness. She simply refuses to lose, Lundquist said.
Lebeck had a few goals coming into the season, ” I just wanted to have fun just, go out and play tennis. I love playing tennis it’s a fun sport, my goals are just to have fun if I win that’s great, I’m not looking to win every match.” Lebeck said.
Lebeck’s best match of the season in her opinion was her first singles match agianst College Of Sequoias a college from Visalia. ” It was a really close match because we both have the same style.”
Lundquist added, “One thing she does so well is she keeps the ball in play she moves the ball around makes the opponent move and stays in the point.” Gradually she’s going to learn more about tactics and more about spin so she can put more topspin on the ball and hit it harder.”
Lundquist mentioned that Lebeck has an advantage. Left-handed players have an advantage over right-handers because right-handers aren’t used to the spins. When asked what player he would compare Lebeck to he replied, “I would compare her to a cerebral player like Martina Hingis who’s not a big hitter but plays smart, that’s what Jackie does she plays smart”
Lebeck admitted that she doesn’t watch very much tennis, but named Andy Roddick as her favorite player. Lebeck’s assistant coach says that her racket grip is like Roddick. Earlier in the season Lebeck was undefeated in her singles matches she said that it was weird because she has never been very good at tennis but added that it boosted her confidence.
