The Bakersfield College women’s tennis team reached the final four in the state team competition and sent several players to the Southern California regionals as the season came to an end.
“We’ve had a terrific season,” BC coach Gene Lundquist said. “We’ve had a group of athletes that have been dedicated and they are not only superb tennis players, but they’re just superb people.”
The Renegades beat each team in the Western State Conference conference twice except for Cuesta College, according to Lundquist.
The Renegades finished with a record of 14-3 overall and 10-2 in the Western State Conference.?
On April 29, the Renegades lost to Orange Coast College 5-3 in the final four of Southern California Dual Match Championships.?
OCC entered the match with an overall record of 17-0 and was rated No. 1 in Southern California.?
OCC reached the required five points after winning the first doubles match in which Brittinany Bass/Brittnie Furvald (OCC) defeated Katie O’Leary/Jennifer Kelly (BC) 6-3, 6-2.?
In the first singles match, Bass defeated O’Leary in two sets 6-4, 7-5.? In other match results, Furuvald (OCC) defeated Shaberena Dickerson (BC) 6-0, 6-0; Evelyn Wallace (OCC) defeated Megan Raphael (BC) 6-4, 6-3; Kalin Eshelman (OCC) defeated Sarena Dickerson 6-4, 3-6, 6-4; Lauren McAtee (BC) defeated Emily Garcia (OCC) 7-5, 7-5; and Pamela Johnson (BC) defeated Jasmine Mathieson (OCC) 6-3, 6-1.?
In other doubles action, the Dickerson twins defeated Wallace/Eshelman 6-4, 6-2; and the Raphael/Johnson and Garcia/Matieson match was suspended with the score at 3-6, 6-3 due to the 5 point rule.
On the first day of the tournament, in singles action, O’Leary defeated Steffanie Mendez from Cerritos 6-2, 6-2, while Vickie Reibstein of Grossmont defeated Shabrena Dickerson of BC 6-3, 6-3.?
In doubles action, O’Leary teamed up with Kelly to defeat Patricia Tebeau and Victoria Andrade of Riverside City College 6-4, 6-3.
On the second day of the tournament, O’Leary was defeated by Furuvald of Orange Coast 6-2, 7-6, while O’Leary and Kelly fell to Courtney Petero and Kim Stern of Long Beach City College 6-2, 6-2.
Men’s and women’s swimming
BC sent four swimmers to the State Finals May 1-3.
Matt Moon, Allison Duran, Mary Bryant and Jordan Urmston all qualified for the State Finals.
Duran finished fourth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 60.7 seconds. Duran also finished eleventh in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:19.17. Duran also placed second in the 50 back, but she was disqualified due to a 15-meter violation.
Moon finished fifth in the 100 breast with a time of 58.08. Moon also finished 11th in the 200 breast with a time of 2:11.15.
Bryant finished 11th on the 3-meter board and 12th on the 1-meter board.
Urmston finished 12th in the 200 back with a time of 2:00.48 and 14th in the 100 back with a time of 54.74.
On April 24-26, the two swim teams competed in the Conference Finals.?
Some of the top finishers in individual competition were Duran, who finished third in the women’s 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:20.43 and first in the women’s 50 back with a time of 28.54.
Duran also finished first in the women’s 100 back with a time of 1:01.73; Moon finished fourth in the men’s 100 breast with a time of 1:00.44 and seventh in the men’s 50 free with a time of 22.82; Skylar Van Auken finished fourth in the women’s 100 individual medley with a time of 1:06.86.
In relay competition, Urmston, Bryce Hayes, John Mitchell and Moon finished fourth in the men’s 200 yard free relay with a time of 1:29.89.
Urmston, Hayes, Moon, and Mitchell also finished fourth in the men’s 400 medley with a time of 3:46.29; Duran, Van Auken, Serina Tomsun and Katelyn Penner finished fourth in the women’s 400 medley with a time of 4:34.07; and Duran, Van Auken, Tomsun and Penner also finished fourth in the women’s 200 medley relay with a time of 2:03.68.
The women finished the meet fourth overall with a score of 371 points, while the men finished fifth overall with a score of 300 points.
Golf
BC’s men’s team, which was named the top-ranked team in Southern California on April 28 after they won the Western State Conference title with a par 380, ended its season May 5 by tying for seventh at the Southern California Community College Regional Championships in San Jacinto.
The Renegades shot a 34-over-par 754. Moorpark won with a 15-over 735.
Freshman Josh Barnes shot a 1-under 143 and tied for sixth to qualify as an individual for the state meet.
The team’s No. 1 player, sophomore Bryce Holloway, placed 14th. He needed to shoot a 145 to make it as an individual but ended his season with a 2-over 146.
Freshman Kirk Harper experienced a minor back injury effecting his performance at the meet, he shot a 20-over-par 164, while sophomore Danny Hoff tied for 22nd with a 5-over 149.
Dana Arneson of the BC women’s golf team accepted a scholarship to Cal State-San Marcos. At Centennial High School, Arneson was named an All-WSC player and finished eighth for BC at the state meet last fall.
