The Bakersfield College volleyball team has started off the season with a record of 3-0.
“Obviously, it’s nice to be 3-0, but I think early in the year you’re still trying to figure out your own identity,” head coach Carl Ferreira said.
On Sept. 5, the Renegades swept Ventura College 25-10, 25-9, 25-19. In the match against Ventura, freshman Brookey Holmes had eight kills while sophomore Katie Cronk added seven kills and freshman Reisa Fessler had six kills.
“I was extremely proud of how efficient we were in games one and two in just managing the game and keeping our errors down,” Ferreira said. “Our efficiency wore them (Ventura) down. I thought we served very well and put a lot of pressure on them. I think that set the tempo of the match. I was very pleased.”
During game three in the match versus Ventura, the Renegades nearly gave up the lead. It was something Ferreira said had to do with the early season focus. “I think after you win games one and two real easy, there is always a tendency to think you should automatically win. I think it is human nature to have a small letdown,” he said.
On Sept. 3, Fessler had 11 kills, three blocks and Holmes had eight kills to lead the Renegades to a three games to one victory over Saddleback College with scores of 25-14, 25-12, 27-29, 25-18. Sophomore Tricia McGowan added 26 assists while Chelsea Rose had five aces.
On Aug. 29, the Renegades scored a season-opening victory over Porterville College 25-15, 25-10, 25-8. In the match versus Porterville, Fessler had nine kills and a .692 kill percentage, while McGowan had 28 assists and two aces. Freshmen Sarah Kurfess had a 76 percent passing percentage versus Porterville College.
The Renegades next match will be Sept. 11 at home at 6 p.m.
