The Bakersfield College women’s golf team is currently in first place in the Western State Conference. The team has won two of their three Western State Conference matches as well as a second place finish. Sophomores Katherine James and Ellen Krausse are the top ranked players in the WSC. James is ranked first and Krassue is second.
Krausse has most recently won the North/South Cup tournament Oct. 4-5, which was played at Dairy Creek Golf Course the first day, and the Morro Bay Golf Course the next. She had scores of 76 on both days. Katherine James finished tied for second with scores of 78 and 77. The Renegades ended up placing second after Sacramento City College came back to win by eight strokes, after being tied with the Renegades the first day.
Krausse ran into a bump when she missed a 10-foot eagle putt on 10; she went on to three putt that hole for par. James struggled on 10 as well where she went eight over because of two water balls.
James said about Dairy Creek that, “Everything breaks that way [to the right]. It’s like going for blind.”
The team played with the wind at the course, which Krausse felt was, “Interesting, it makes it different, we don’t see a lot of it down here.”
The Renegades conference match against La Verne on Oct. 12 was rained out and with only a few tournaments left and three of those in the coming week, the women’s team are trying to, “Stay in the present” as Dee Ray said.
James went on to say, “[The] focus is always now, but you keep it [the playoffs] in the back of your mind, it’s what you’re working towards.”
They are hoping to “Play well and maybe people can send us some luck,” James said.
She continued by saying, “We want to get lucky this time. Then [get] luckier than Monday.” Krausse and Ray finished her sentence by saying, “Then play well Monday and even better on Wednesday.” Soon the whole team almost in unison said, “Then even better than that the next time.”
The Renegade women traveled to Canyons Oct. 19 and host at Riverlakes Golf Course in Bakersfield Oct. 26.
