The Bakersfield College women’s basketball team played West Los Angeles on Feb. 3 and came out on top with a 20-point win of 71-51.
Lakai Banks-Dean, sophomore forward, talked after the game about the win.
“We feel great. It’s the biggest win of the season. And we thought we put our best effort into it, and we got to see the results of it,” said Banks-Dean.
Banks-Dean continued saying, “We knew coming into the game we couldn’t take them lightly and they wouldn’t take us lightly either. We just have to put it out there and hope for the best.”
BC took the lead early and kept it in the first half of the game. At halftime BC lead 28-22 over L.A. West.
Coach Paula Dahl talked about how she thought the team was playing in the first half.
“I was frustrated at halftime because I didn’t think we were putting enough energy in. We are not at a point in our season for any game to be just practice,” said Dahl.
Sophomore guard Ashlee Taira talked about the degree of difficulty against L.A. West and said, “Right now, I don’t think they have won a game in conference, so I wouldn’t rate it above a five. I think it’s a good win, but it’s not something to be overly proud about.”
Taira also talked about her performance against L.A. West after the game.
“I feel pretty good. I’ve been working on it in practice and looking for my open shots and keeping everyone else involved to have good teamwork. I feel pretty good about the win because we have been working on playing together and staying calm,” said Taira.
Dahl commented on Taira’s game against L.A. West and said, “Ashlee had a great game tonight and against them last time. Before the game, I told her to go out and have fun and she did and took advantage of the openings.”
BC lost to Canyons College 93-50 on Feb. 3 and Los Angeles Valley 62-50 on Feb. 15. BC is 8-15 overall and 3-7 in Western State Conference.
BC’s last game of the season is at home on Feb. 20 at 5 p.m. against Glendale College.
