The Bakersfield College women’s tennis team has played six matches and has a record of 2-4 overall and a conference record of 0-2.
The Renegades lost to Ventura by a score of 8-1 on Feb. 25 and 6-3 to Santa Barbara on Feb. 18.
Coach Gene Lundquist said of the Santa Barbara match that, “it was a much closer match than the score indicates.”
A big problem for the team has been dealing with injuries and sickness.
Jessica Burrow feels a big area the team needs to work on, is staying fit and healthy.
“Coming to practice. That’s definitely our main issue right now,” she said.
“A lot of us have been sick, but we’re trying to stay fit because that prevents injury.”
The Renegades No. 1 player, Megan Pate-Raphael, was missing from practice on March 1 and Lundquist is hopeful that she will be back very soon.
“We have matches coming, and so we’re hoping she’ll be back,” he said.
Katja Thacker, No. 4 player, mentioned a mindset the Renegades are working toward.
“We need to think everyone matters; six is just as important as number one,” she said.
The Renegades are still very optimistic, and coach Lundquist is very happy with the positive attitudes despite the record.
“We have a great group of young women, and we’re going to keep going,” he said.
