Senior Dariane Nabor, a self-confessed perfectionist and procrastinator, represents the essence of the new generation of teenage multitaskers. In her three years at Delano High School, the 16-year-old has dabbled in band, choir, math club, student government and Academic Decathlon.
She is interested in a journalism career due to its broad nature and joined the summer workshop to find out if the career is right for her.
“I like having a lot of options,” Nabor said of the many facets of journalism and media. “Hopefully this experience will confirm if I really want to go into journalism.”
Nabor is aware of what she wants in life. After an overwhelming year of too much homework and time-consuming extracurricular activities, she realized she wasn’t sure why she was doing all the work. So, Nabor wrote down six life goals to make her efforts more focused and purposeful. She included an enjoyable career and good social relationships on her list.
Her efforts as a student have not gone unrecognized. The Delano native was chosen as her high school’s delegate to the Girls State conference this summer, where she will join other young women learning about how to participate in government. In April, Nabor won the Delano Junior Miss Pageant and will attend the state contest in August.
Nabor is Filipino, but said that although her parents are not extremely traditional, she embraces her heritage.
“I still know about my culture,” said Nabor, who stays connected through UFO, a club on at Delano High.
“That’s the United Filipino Organization, not an unknown flying object,” Nabor said with a smile.
