The Bakersfield College softball team played against Santa Barbara City College and lost 3-1 on Feb 18.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the fourth inning, when Santa Barbara’s Laura Cayons came in to score off a double from teammate Lisa Zeitlin.
At the bottom of the seventh inning, BC’s Christian Moore gave BC its first run of the night from Brittany Hunt’s single, which tied the score at 1-1.
At the top of the eighth inning, Santa Barbara scored two runs to win the game.
On Feb. 20, the BC softball team got its first win of the season against Taft College 8-0.
Coach Sandi Taylor talked about the softball team’s first win.
“We were definitely excited about the win against Taft, a Kern County team was a big win for us. So it’s good to get that first win in and get the momentum going,” said Taylor.
In the bottom of the second inning BC scored five runs. Hunt doubled to allow teammates Brittney Morrison and Laura Fox to score. Shortly after, Jessica Newton-Smith tripled to right field and Hunt and Joni Lagerstrom scored two more runs. Catcher Jamie Dumatrait got a base hit, then Fox hit a double to allow Dumatrait to score the final run of the second inning.
BC only played five innings and in the last inning BC made two more runs. Lagerstrom tripled to right field and Sabrina Rea singled to bring in Lagerstrom. Tayler Ward was BC’s winning pitcher of the game with a shutout.
Ward talked about her win after the game.
“It was really exciting because it was our first win this season and to do that as a freshman is really exciting,” said Ward.
Taylor also talked about Ward’s first win.
“It is very exciting for her to get her first collegiate win. She keeps getting stronger and stronger,” said Taylor.
Ward also commented on how this is a step in the right direction for the team.
“Well this is the first step you have to go through to win more. It is only going to go uphill from here, we just have to keep battling,” said Ward.
On Feb. 23, BC played against Oxnard College and got its second win of the season 8-7.
Oxnard scored the first run of the game in the top of first inning. In the bottom of the third inning, BC’s Courtney Hockett was the first to bat and hit a home run. Amanda Roberts doubled to left field to bring in Amanda Flores. Brittney Morrison hit a single so Jessica Newton-Smith could score another run for BC.
In the bottom of the fourth inning Flores doubled to center field to bring in a run. Newton-Smith hit a single to bring in a run for her team.
In the bottom of the seventh inning the score was 7-5 Oxnard. BC’s Dumatrait hit a triple to center field, which brought in three runs to win the game.
BC won its third game of the season against Antelope Valley College 12-2, on Feb. 25. “It was a good win,” said Taylor.
For BC the leaders for batting averages are Newton-Smith .435, Amanda Roberts .417, Brittany Hunt with .400 and Brittney Morrison with .308. Home run leaders are Courtney Hockett and Brittney Morrison with one. Ward leads the pitchers in wins with three so far this season and an earned run average of 6.44.
