The Bakersfield College Student Government Association announced the results of its 2026 student elections following a public vote count and approval meeting held in the BCSGA Boardroom.
The election, which took place from April 6 through April 10 at Bakersfield College, resulted in 454 total ballots cast out of a student body of 28,645, and recorded a voter turnout of just 1.58%. The low turnout highlights limited student participation in campus elections.
Khalfani Mackey was elected student body president with 304 votes, defeating “none of the above,” which received 69 votes, while 81 ballots were left blank. Mackey also secured the role of Kern Community College District student trustee with 364 votes.
Zaina Jawad won the vice president position with 310 votes, also defeating “none of the above,” which received 61 votes.
The race for director of student organizations was more competitive, with Angel Camacho Higuera receiving the highest number of votes at 121, followed by Jayme Lynne Dorsey with 109 and Matthew Placencia with 89. An additional 49 voters selected “none of the above,” while 86 left the section blank.
For senator positions, all three candidates–Gerardo Herrera (244 votes), Jason Wattern (232 votes), and Qunian Ray (209 votes), were appointed, as the student government currently has 12 open seats. The organization continues its search for nine more students to fill the remaining positions.
The vote count and approval meeting, held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., was open to the public with many of the candidates in attendance.
For the next few weeks, student government activities will feature a final Senate meeting, where departing members will be recognized for their work, followed by student involvement awards and a transition ceremony to welcome newly elected officials.
